Supporting Net Zero Emission (NZE), Pertamina International Refinery Program Achieves 430 Thousand Tons CO2 Eq Decarbonization

Jakarta, March 14, 2025 – Achieving Net Zero Emission (NZE) by 2060 or sooner is a goal that requires support from all stakeholders, including 黑料不打烊 Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) as a key industry player. In line with this, KPI actively contributes to the NZE target through various programs.

"KPI is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission (NZE) target by 2060 or earlier through multiple decarbonization programs, particularly within Scope 1, which involves reducing emissions from refinery operations," said Hermansyah Y Nasroen, Corporate Secretary of KPI.

As of December 2024, KPI has successfully implemented decarbonization programs, reducing emissions by approximately 430 thousand tons of CO2 equivalent. According to Hermansyah, this achievement results from various energy efficiency initiatives and low-carbon power implementation in refinery operations.

"To minimize carbon emissions from flare combustion, for example, KPI has implemented a Flare Gas Recovery System. This means that the gas produced during crude oil processing is optimized for reuse, thereby reducing the amount burned in the flare," explained Hermansyah.

Another ongoing KPI initiative, according to Hermansyah, is optimizing natural gas utilization as a utility fuel to replace refinery fuel oil.

"Natural gas is increasingly being promoted as a primary fuel for refineries. KPI has even prepared for its use at the Balikpapan Refinery, which will become the largest refinery in Indonesia. Through synergy among Sub-holdings, Pertamina has constructed the Senipah-Balikpapan gas pipeline to ensure an adequate supply of natural gas to support the operations of the Balikpapan Refinery," Hermansyah added.

He further emphasized that KPI remains committed to enhancing its decarbonization programs in alignment with ESG (Environmental, Social & Governance) principles.

"We hope that our decarbonization targets will be met according to the roadmap we have developed," Hermansyah concluded.

Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Vice President of Corporate Communication at Pertamina, added that decarbonization is Pertamina's strategy for maintaining existing business operations while ensuring national energy security in an environmentally friendly manner.

"Decarbonization is Pertamina's commitment to supporting the government’s target of reducing carbon emissions and achieving Net Zero Emission (NZE) by 2060," stated Fadjar.
