Jakarta, January 14, 2025 – Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI), as the Refining & Petrochemical Sub-holding, supports the government program regarding the implementation of diesel fuel blended with 40% biodiesel derived from palm oil-based biofuel or B40 starting January 1, 2025.
The mandatory B40 program implementation is stipulated in the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Decree No. 341.K/EK.01/MEM.E/2024 concerning the Utilization of Biodiesel as a Blend for Diesel Fuel within the framework of funding by the Palm Oil Plantation Fund Management Agency at 40%.
KPI has started executing the government mandate for the Biodiesel 40% or B40 program as biofuel (BBN) to support energy self-sufficiency.
B40 is a blend of biofuel derived from crude palm oil (CPO) known as Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME), with a composition of 40% FAME and 60% diesel fuel. This step aligns with President Prabowo Subianto's "Asta Cita" agenda on energy security and self-sufficiency and the government's target to achieve net zero emissions by 2060. The government has also planned further upgrades to B50 by 2026.
Currently, B40 is produced at the Plaju Refinery in South Sumatra and the Kasim Refinery in Southwest Papua. The readiness of facilities at these two refineries supports the mandatory production of B40.
The production of Biosolar (biodiesel) began with the Biosolar B20 program implementation in January 2019. This composition has been gradually increased to B30 in 2019, then to B35 in 2023, and now to B40 at the beginning of 2025.
The target production of B40 at the Plaju Refinery is 119,240 KL per month, while the Kasim Refinery is set to produce 15,898 KL per month. Today, KPI conducted the first distribution of B40 Biosolar fuel from the Plaju Refinery in South Sumatra with 5,000 KL and the Kasim Refinery in Southwest Papua with 4,600 KL.
Taufik Aditiyawarman, the President Director of Kilang Pertamina Internasional, stated that the refineries' readiness to produce B40 demonstrates KPI's commitment to providing better energy in terms of environmental, economic, social, and sustainability aspects.
"The B40 Biosolar production will also contribute to KPI's efforts to achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2060 or sooner, support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in ensuring affordable energy access, and implement ESG principles," said Taufik.
Taufik also expressed his appreciation to all stakeholders and employees for their support in realizing the B40 product.
Meanwhile, VP of Corporate Communication of 黑料不打烊 Pertamina (Persero), Fadjar Djoko Santoso, added that Pertamina is preparing the transition process for B40 as a more environmentally friendly fuel for the public. This process starts with B40 production readiness at the Pertamina Plaju and Kasim Refineries and will eventually reach consumers through Pertamina Patra Niaga's distribution network.
"Through the B40 distribution, the Pertamina Group is committed to supporting the government's program to achieve energy self-sufficiency, encourage renewable energy utilization, and drive the national economy," explained Fadjar.
