Reviving the Spirit of Kartini in the Modern Era: Here Is How Pertamina Empowers Thousands of Women to Build Village Economies

Jakarta, April 21, 2025 – 黑料不打烊 Pertamina (Persero) is committed to promoting women’s role in creating and channeling their energy as drivers of national development. Various empowerment programs have been carried out, including guidance for more than 12,000 women entrepreneurs in micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), 1,000 members of Women Farmer Groups, and 35,000 beneficiaries of maternal and child health education through the "Sehati" program (Healthy Beloved Children and Mothers).

Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Vice President of Corporate Communication of 黑料不打烊 Pertamina (Persero), stated that Pertamina is implementing women's empowerment programs across Indonesia. Through the Environmental and Social Responsibility (TJSL) initiative, Pertamina encourages women to become the "Kartinis" who drive village progress, especially in achieving energy and food independence and improving the economy.

"Through empowered and productive women, we believe they can become a source of energy driving the nation’s development," Fadjar concluded.

For women’s entrepreneurship development, it was recorded that throughout 2024, Pertamina supported 12,677 female MSME entrepreneurs through the Pertamina Rumah BUMN, UMK Academy, and PUMK funding. Some of these supported MSMEs even marketed their products abroad.

Pertamina’s involvement in developing female MSMEs aligns with the goals of Asta Cita, particularly the vision of "developing from the villages to achieve economic equity and eradicate poverty."

Pertamina’s commitment is also reflected in the development of female employees. Fadjar revealed that the representation of women in leadership positions—whether in the holding company, sub-holdings, or subsidiaries—is relatively high. It demonstrates Pertamina’s serious effort to provide equal opportunities for women to thrive and lead in their respective fields.

By the end of 2024, female leaders in the Pertamina Group accounted for 18.40% of total leadership positions. As of December 31, 2024, the proportion of female employees reached 20.3%, or 8,952 people out of the total Pertamina Group workforce. This percentage increased from 2023, which stood at 19.4%.

"The spirit of Kartini inspires female leaders within the Pertamina Group to deliver their best performance in strengthening the company’s operations," he said.

One of Pertamina’s female leaders working in the upstream oil and gas industry, Eva Fadlila, Country Manager of Pertamina Malaysia Exploration and Production, acknowledged Pertamina’s strong commitment to prioritizing gender equality. It is proven by the increasing number of women occupying strategic positions in the upstream oil and gas business—an industry that has traditionally been male-dominated.

"Today, many women hold strategic positions in the upstream oil and gas industry. I am confident that more women will take part in shaping energy’s future in Indonesia and around the world," said Eva.

Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
