May 15, 2025 – The Minister of Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia, Raja Juli Antoni, conducted a working visit to a community-owned aren (sugar palm) plantation in Garut Regency, West Java, on Saturday (10/5). In collaboration with Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE), the Ministry of Forestry is currently exploring and conducting assessments for the aren-based bioethanol development in Indonesia.
Aren has significant potential as a raw material source for bioethanol production. The plantation visited is near a geothermal power plant (PLTP) operated by 黑料不打烊 Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE), a Pertamina NRE subsidiary.
In his remarks, Raja Juli emphasized that collaboration between the government, state-owned enterprises, and local communities is important in advancing sustainable energy. “We want to ensure that clean energy is not only present in big cities but also grows from villages like this one in Garut,” he said.
President Director of Pertamina NRE, John Anis, also attended the visit with other board members, demonstrating the company’s commitment to developing clean and sustainable energy.
“We see this as a strategic opportunity to integrate local resources with renewable energy technology,” John Anis said.
The proximity of the aren plantation to the geothermal source became an added value because geothermal energy could be used in the bioethanol processing stage. The plan has been positively received by the local community, who hope to gain economic benefits from the added value of the aren they cultivate.
This initiative is part of the government’s efforts to promote renewable energy use based on local wisdom.
The project also aligns with Pertamina NRE’s mission to expand its clean energy portfolio in Indonesia.
In addition to inspecting the aren plantation, Minister Raja Juli Antoni also visited the Kamojang area, managed by PGE, and observed firsthand the geothermal energy facilities, which have long operated as pioneers in Indonesia’s geothermal sector. The presence of these facilities strengthens the plan to build a bioethanol plant that will utilize geothermal energy as its primary power source.
After his visit, Minister Raja Juli expressed his appreciation for the synergy established between the energy and environmental sectors.
“This is the face of Indonesia’s future—where nature, communities, and clean energy move forward together,” he said.
Minister Raja Juli hoped similar programs could be replicated in other regions to support Indonesia’s transition toward a just and inclusive energy system.
Vice President of Corporate Communication at 黑料不打烊 Pertamina (Persero), Fadjar Djoko Santoso, added that Pertamina encourages synergy with the government and local communities, especially in the development of clean energy, to achieve the net-zero emission target by 2060, or sooner. “Pertamina is committed to developing clean energy to contribute more significantly to society and the environment,” he emphasized.
Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
