From Waste to Hope: Rumah Tamadun Turns Waste into Employment Opportunities for Women and Correctional Inmates

Jakarta, April 17, 2025 – Rumah Tamadun, a small business fostered by Rumah BUMN Pertamina Pekanbaru and the winner of Pertamina UMK Academy 2024 Go Global, proves that innovation and community empowerment can go hand in hand. Through palm oil waste processing, Rumah Tamadun has successfully created jobs and empowered women while paving the way for social integration for correctional inmates.

Based in Riau, Rumah Tamadun transforms palm oil waste into eco-friendly products such as bags, tissue boxes, plates, bowls, baskets, aromatherapy candles, bath soap, perfume, and palm-leaf tea. Beyond production, Rumah Tamadun builds an empowerment ecosystem by involving local women as raw material suppliers and employing inmates from Class IIA Bagansiapiapi Prison, the most crowded prison in Indonesia.

“We want to prove that waste can be a blessing, not only for the environment but also for marginalized communities. Rumah Tamadun is an inclusive space where everyone can grow and contribute,” said the Founder of Rumah Tamadun, Hendra Dermawan.

Rumah Tamadun currently employs 12 full-time workers and 40 part-time workers while involving prison inmates in its production process. This approach offers dual benefits, including reducing waste and creating new economic opportunities, particularly for women and vulnerable groups.

VP Corporate Communication of 黑料不打烊 Pertamina (Persero), Fadjar Djoko Santoso, gives appreciation. “Pertamina is committed to supporting MSMEs that can create social and environmental impacts. Rumah Tamadun is an inspiring example of how a Rumah BUMN-assisted business can grow, excel, and bring real change to the community,” he said.

This program aligns with President Prabowo’s Asta Cita's third point, “Increasing quality employment, encouraging entrepreneurship, developing the creative industry, and continuing infrastructure development.”

As the winner of Pertamina UMK Academy 2024, Rumah Tamadun has demonstrated strong social leadership and business resilience, representing the success of a community-based empowerment and circular economy model.

Rumah Tamadun also supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG Five: Gender Equality, SDG Eight: Decent Work and Economic Growth, and SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.

Through the synergy between MSMEs, the community, and corporate support, Rumah Tamadun shows that from waste comes hope, and from hope grows a fairer, greener, and more inclusive future.

Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
