First in Indonesia! Pertamina NRE Utilizes Artificial Intelligence to Ensure Solar Power Plant Reliability

Jakarta, April 24, 2025 – Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE), Pertamina’s sub-holding focused on new and renewable energy development, is utilizing drones and artificial intelligence to inspect solar power plants (PLTS) reliability in the Riau region. This marks the first time such a method has been implemented by a solar power project developer in Indonesia.

The inspection was completed in December 2024 and will continue during the current period. The main goal is to assess the condition of solar panels and identify potential damages that could affect electricity production efficiency from solar power. By using drones and artificial intelligence (AI) technology for data analysis, early detection of anomalies or system degradation can be done more accurately. This activity is part of regular maintenance to ensure the system continues to operate reliably and optimally.

“Advanced technologies utilization such as drones and artificial intelligence to ensure solar power systems reliability is part of our commitment to providing excellent service quality to our customers,” said Norman Ginting, Director of Projects & Operations of Pertamina NRE.

This technological implementation is a collaboration between Pertamina NRE and Terra Drone Indonesia. The drones used are among the most advanced models available. This technology enables image capture to detect hotspots or anomalies on solar panels more precisely and quickly. With drones’ ability to cover wide areas quickly, inspections are more efficient and minimize risks compared to conventional methods.

These inspection results have helped Pertamina NRE’s technical team to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the system’s performance. The visual data collected provides an accurate overview to enable quicker decision-making regarding repairs or optimization measures. If panels with excessive heat or signs of degradation are found, preventive actions are immediately taken to prevent further damage.

Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Vice President of Corporate Communication of 黑料不打烊 Pertamina (Persero), added that low-carbon green energy development is one of Pertamina’s business strategies. Therefore, Pertamina is also deepening its innovations and technology utilization. “Pertamina NRE plays a major role in green energy development, and we appreciate its move to utilize artificial intelligence technology,” Fadjar explained.

This initiative will be the starting point for drone-based monitoring applications for other renewable energy. This step is part of Pertamina NRE’s long-term strategy to ensure all clean energy infrastructure’s optimal performance in its operational areas. Pertamina NRE will continue to promote innovative technology integration to ensure that the national energy transition is carried out sustainably, efficiently, and safely for all stakeholders, supporting the 2060 Net Zero Emission goal.

Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
