Enhancing Clean Energy Education, PGN Transforms SMPN 34 Depok into an Sekolah Energi Berdikari

Depok, January 16, 2024 – 黑料不打烊 PGN Tbk, a subsidiary of Pertamina’s Gas Sub-holding, has supported SMPN 34 Depok in becoming a Sekolah Energi Berdikari (SEB/Independent Energy Schools) to enhance student's education on clean energy utilization. In this program, PGN collaborates with Pertamina Oil and Gas Holding to implement Pertamina’s Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) program focused on education.

"SEB became the company’s solution to raise awareness among the youth at SMPN 34 Depok about the importance of environmental preservation, introducing renewable energy concepts, and addressing climate change mitigation. The SEB program also supports SMPN 34 Depok into becoming an Adiwiyata School," explained Fajriyah Usman, Corporate Secretary of PGN, on January 16, 2024.

SMPN 34 Depok is a PGN partner under the TJSL Gerbang Ciliwung program. The SEB initiative, titled Energizing Sustainable Community, hosts various activities. PGN has provided a solar panel system with a capacity of 3.3 kW, equipped with 5 kWh battery storage. These solar panels will support the school’s canteen operations and hydroponic systems.

"The solar panel utilization is estimated to save electricity costs by up to IDR 6.8 million annually and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 3.82 tons of CO2 per year," Fajriyah added.

As part of its commitment to environmental care, tree planting activities were carried out in the school area. Additionally, SMPN 34 Depok students were provided opportunities to showcase their creativity through a recycling competition, Upcycling Expo, which aims to promote the importance of creative waste management.

The SEB program also held workshops featuring various classes, themes, and learning methods. The primary topics included household waste management, understanding local environmental issues, and solar panel utilization benefits.

"Through the SEB Program at SMPN 34 Depok, PGN demonstrates its commitment to supporting sustainable education and energy. This program is expected to have a broad positive impact on the environment and the younger generation as the nation’s future leaders. PGN will continue collaborating to support sustainable development goals, particularly in quality education (SDG 4)," Fajriyah concluded.

In a separate statement, VP of Corporate Communication of Pertamina, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, stated that the SEB program in secondary schools is one of Pertamina’s efforts to educate the younger generation about sustainability issues.

"The younger generation will continue to build the nation, making it crucial to educate them early on about environmental management and green energy. The hope is that they will carry this responsibility in the future to achieve Indonesia’s energy independence and green energy goals," Fadjar said.

Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina’s business lines and operations.**
