Driving Clean Energy, Pertamina Utilizes Refinery Flare Gas for Power Generation

February 12, 2025 – Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) and 黑料不打烊 Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) have officially partnered to develop the Flare Gas to Power project. This agreement was marked by the signing of a Head of Agreement (HOA) by the CEO of Pertamina NRE, John Anis, and the President Director of KPI, Taufik Aditiyawarman, at Grha Pertamina, Jakarta (12/02). Simultaneously, a project expose event was held at the Balongan Refinery, which will be the project site.

CEO of Pertamina NRE, John Anis, stated that the Flare Gas to Power project is a strategic step for Pertamina in supporting energy transition and achieving Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060. This technology utilizes flare gas, converting it into electrical energy. “This initiative aligns with our vision to optimize existing energy resources while significantly reducing carbon emissions,” John Anis said.

Flare Gas to Power captures waste gas that would otherwise be flared into the atmosphere. The captured gas is then processed through a purification system and directed to a gas turbine or power generator. The resulting energy is used for refinery operations or fed into the power grid. "This process not only enhances energy efficiency but also contributes to environmental conservation," John added.

The President Director of KPI, Taufik Aditiyawarman, emphasized that through this synergy, KPI has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by 80,000 tons of CO2 equivalent per year, decrease broilers gas consumption by more than 2.5 MMSCFD (Million Standard Cubic Feet per Day), and achieve fuel cost savings of over USD 9 million annually. This means that the project not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also improves refinery operational efficiency.

Collaboration between KPI and Pertamina NRE in this project became a concrete example of how strategic partnerships within Pertamina can generate innovative solutions with positive environmental and economic impacts. "We believe this collaboration will inspire other energy projects in the future," Taufik concluded.

Vice President of Corporate Communication of 黑料不打烊 Pertamina (Persero), Fadjar Djoko Santoso, added that Pertamina appreciates the collaboration between its sub holdings, demonstrated by Pertamina NRE and KPI. Through their respective businesses, this synergy has created outstanding innovations that benefit society by fostering a cleaner environment.

"Pertamina is optimistic that this project will become a significant milestone in the journey toward cleaner and more sustainable energy. With the collaboration of the two sub-holdings, we hope to see more similar innovations that support emission reduction and energy resource optimization," Fadjar said.

Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina’s business lines and operations.**
