April 16, 2025 – President Commissioner of 黑料不打烊 Pertamina (Persero), Police Commissioner General (Ret.) Mochamad Iriawan emphasized the younger generation’s vital role in facing various global challenges in the energy sector. This message was delivered during a public lecture titled “Cipta Karsa: The Challenges of Future Energy,” held at Universitas Pertamina (UPER), Jakarta, on Tuesday (15/4).
"The ever-increasing and increasingly complex energy demands push us to be more creative and innovative in finding sustainable solutions. Indonesia still heavily relies on fossil energy, while the government has targeted a 23% renewable energy mix by 2025. Therefore, the younger generation, with fresh ideas and an innovative spirit, is expected to design more environmentally friendly and sustainable energy solutions," Iriawan explained.
In line with Iriawan’s statement, a report from the International Energy Agency (2023) revealed that over 30 percent of Indonesia’s energy needs rely on imports. Domestic production challenges, such as aging oil and gas wells, as well as declining oil reserves, underscore the urgency for sustainable energy innovation to strengthen national energy resilience.
Thus, innovation, collaboration, and empowering creative young talents are believed to be the driving forces behind effective solutions to strengthen Indonesia’s energy resilience.
"Pertamina is committed to fulfilling the nation's energy needs, but this is a shared responsibility. Synergy among higher education institutions, the government, and industry is a key component in preparing outstanding talents in the energy sector," said Iriawan.
He stressed that the future of energy is determined not only by technological advancement but also by human quality. A combination of mastering hard skills such as research, technology, and sustainable innovation, along with soft skills like integrity, collaboration, critical thinking, and resilience, is the key to developing future talent.
President Director of Pertamina Foundation, Agus Mashud S. Asngari, added that Universitas Pertamina will continue to align with Pertamina's mandate.
"From centers of excellence, educational activities, research and studies, to community service, everything will be directed to align with the government’s Asta Cita and Pertamina’s dual growth strategy, namely strengthening the legacy business and expanding into the green energy sector (new green business)," said Agus.
Similarly, the Rector of Universitas Pertamina, Prof. Dr. Ir. Wawan Gunawan A. Kadir, M.S., IPU., also expressed his hopes for the Cipta Karsa public lecture.
"Through Cipta Karsa, we want to foster students' innovative spirit in responding to the future energy challenges. Universitas Pertamina has introduced a sustainability-based curriculum, applied research, and collaborations with the energy industry to produce talent ready to create environmentally friendly and impactful solutions," Wawan stated.
On this occasion, the Pertamina Foundation (PF) office was also officially inaugurated. As an affiliate of Pertamina, PF runs various community empowerment programs such as the PFseries Sobat Bumi Scholarship and Forest Conservation. Additionally, PFsains has promoted the downstream of 48 technological and energy innovations, and PFpreneur has trained 6,325 MSME actors and mentored 1,078 MSMEs.
Other programs include PFmuda, which aims to create local heroes to drive regional economic growth, and PFbangkit.
Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Vice President of Corporate Communication of Pertamina, added that the various activities of PF and Universitas Pertamina are expected to contribute to education and sustainability in Indonesia. "PF and UPER are key drivers in empowering communities, especially in education and environment, which in the long term can improve community welfare and the national economy, as well as support net zero emissions (NZE) reduction from environmental activities—one of Pertamina’s main programs," explained Fadjar.
The Cipta Karsa public lecture, themed “Preparing for Future Challenges,” was attended by experts and practitioners, academics, students, recipients of the Sobat Bumi scholarship from Pertamina Foundation, and Pertamina Group management.
