Commemorating International Day of Forests, Pertamina Strengthens Sustainable Forest Program for NZE 2060

Jakarta, April 15, 2025 – 黑料不打烊 Pertamina (Persero) is committed to strengthening the Pertamina Sustainable Forest program development to support the International Day of Forests and help achieve the Net Zero Emission (NZE) target by 2060 or sooner.

Pertamina planted approximately nine million trees in its Sustainable Forest areas between 2018 and 2024, successfully reducing carbon emissions by 222 thousand tons of CO2eq annually.

Vice President of Corporate Communication of Pertamina, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, stated that the Pertamina Sustainable Forest plays a vital role in preserving forest sustainability while improving the local economy. It aligns with the theme of the International Day of Forests, “Forests and Food,” which highlights the role of forests in ensuring global food security, supporting livelihoods, and promoting biodiversity.

“The Pertamina Sustainable Forest is a conservation and reforestation program carried out through planting mangrove and terrestrial trees, providing tree seedlings, and simultaneously boosting the local economy,” Fadjar said.

According to Fadjar, the Pertamina Sustainable Forest program aligns with Pertamina’s commitment to implementing ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) principles and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) #13, #14, and #15.

“The tree planting in Pertamina's Sustainable Forest involves local communities to ensure sustainability and generate economic benefits for them,” Fadjar added.

Fadjar further explained that mangroves play a significant role as carbon absorbers and storers while preventing coastal erosion and mitigating the impact of tsunami waves.

The tree planting activities carried out by Pertamina have benefited 4,783 individuals, generating an income of IDR 3 billion per group annually. Pertamina has implemented 337 tree-planting programs, covering a total planting area of 891 hectares.

Pertamina also conducted a Social Forestry Program in 13 locations across Sumatra, Sulawesi, Kalimantan, Papua, Bali & Nusa Tenggara, and Java Island. Pertamina provides seedling assistance, organic fertilizer management, and forest conservation education to 3,795 farmers living near forest areas.

Pertamina’s collaboration with farmers has resulted in the planting of 68 hectares of forest with productive trees. The education provided to the farmers has also led to organic fertilizer production. The farmers have successfully produced 338 thousand of productive tree seedlings.

Wastoyo, a Local Hero from the Social Forestry Business Group (KUPS) Margo Rukun Bestari in Lampung, Sumatra, said that his group has successfully produced 190 thousand tree seedlings and has become self-sufficient in managing organic fertilizer.

“KUPS Margo Rukun Bestari is now able to produce 190 thousand productive tree seedlings and process 70 tons of coffee skin annually into organic fertilizer, generating an annual income of IDR 1.5 billion. We are truly grateful that through managing this environmental conservation business, we are blessed,” he said.
